Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"The dishes were so good, we took tagliatelles al ragu, tortellini con ricotta, and uccelini (beef with parmigianno). Waiters are very kind and prices are decent! :)"
"Great food. A bit away from old town. Nice and cozy. The bolognese ragu was excellent."
"This place has been recommended to us by a couple different friends who live in Bologna. I had Cotoletta alla Bolognese, which was so delicious that I was biting off remnants of meat from the bone, which I never really do (and probably committed faux pas by doing so). It goes well with the side of tomato/onion sauce. Then I followed it with the dessert Tenerina al Cioccolato Fondente con Crema di Mascarpone, which is a fancy name for brownie with mascarpone cream. It was like heaven in my mouth and I was really tempted to order another one, but gotta watch those calories."
"Stunning service! I’ve been amazed by the quality of the food, but the service brings the 5th star in the rating. From what I experienced in Bologna, it was fantastic!"
"Wow, shocked at our experience tonight. For context: we attempted to make reservations with several restaurants listed online as “top in Bologna”. We were too late - all were full. Fortunately, this place had a spot for two. The atmosphere was wonderful - rustic and dignified. For antipasto we had local cheese with fig spread and salumi. All was incredible, particularly the fig spread. We then ordered tagliatelle and gramigna which were both immaculate! We could not decide which was better. We paired our meal with a glass of San Giovese red wine which was full in flavor with no after bitterness. Absolutely wonderful. We ended with tiramisu made with their mascarpone and two Amari. 5/5 for sure. Compliments go to Giacomo and his staff, particular the Sardo student waiter. Professional and welcoming."
"This place is located in Piazza Malpighi cozy halfway below ground across from the Basilica of Saint Francis. We walked by it without really noticing it because of its location. Place is really quaint. Very laid-back. The weight staff is friendly. I had a delicious lasagna Bolognese. One of my friends had a carbonara. We always share our food so we all get to taste what everyone else is eating. I highly recommend that except if you’re Joey from friends and then Joey doesn’t share his food. I like sharing because it gives me an opportunity to taste other flavors. This is a nice local unpretentious spot when you’re in the mood for a really good meal at a very affordable price. I can honestly say that since I’ve been hanging out in Bologna, I have had the most amazing food. my reviews are going to sound boring because I keep telling you how great the food is and it’s true. The best part is that whenever I used to go out to dinner in the states I would always leave feeling bloated and uncomfortable. I used to think I had gluten sensitivities. I have never felt bloated or uncomfortable after having a meal anywhere in Italy not even when I bought some thing at the train station."
"Trattoria Buca di San Francesco offers a pleasantly surprising experience. At first glance, the old-fashioned atmosphere might make you think the food won’t impress, but it was truly delicious. The salumeria platter was a standout, and the main dishes were flavorful. While the lasagna was decent, I’ve had better versions in other spots in Bologna, a city famous for its lasagna. Overall, it’s a great place to enjoy authentic local dishes despite a few minor reservations."
"Very good place for authentic Bolognese cuisine. The fresh pasta is extremely delicious. The atmosphere is very rustic and sweet. One thing was the bread isn’t too fresh"
